Hi! đ Welcome to The Big Y!
If youâve ever used a GenAI tool in your work or personal life, youâll know that either it works really well and youâre absolutely amazed by the output. Or you spend too much time trying to adjust your prompt or work with the tool just to end up frustrated and doing it yourself.
The brutal reviews from the release of the Humane AI Pin are a great example of this. In theory, the AI Pin can unlock hands-free, phone-free tools but in reality, the technology isnât good enough to make it work consistently. In The Verge review, the reviewer says that one of the cons of the AI Pin is: âJust doesnât work half the time.â If every other time you try to use it and it doesnât work, the frustration will build up quickly.
Struggling to meet performance expectations isnât limited to Humane. Some Copilot users are also complaining that Copilot isnât meeting the high expectations they have, though Microsoft is blaming user error for poor results (đŹ). The question is: If these tools work really well 80% of the time, does that make up for the 20% of the time theyâre unable to assist with tasks?
I think weâll see more and more AI applications and AI powered hardware come out that will be super cool, yet frustrating to use due to reliability issues. The AI excitement is going to be replaced with a long slog of building working, productive applications.
Amazonâs stance on its own role in the AI race is more optimistic than perhaps others in the same space. Amazon says the future of AI will run on Amazon, but if past AI performance and speed is an indicator, they havenât shown up to take that place in the AI race. Weâll see if they can fulfill their goals by wishing even harder.
